Appropriate Biomedical Test and Calibration Methods for LMIC

Biomedical test equipment are important tools for assessing the electrical safety and functional quality of medical devices. They are used to do preventive maintenance and calibration as well as corrective maintenance like diagnosis and troubleshooting. This type of biomedical test equipment is generally not available in Low and Middle Income Country (LMIC) contexts, as they are expensive, not available, or periodical calibrating is difficult and expensive.

Therefore, there is a need to have a series of Do-It-Yourself kind of calibration/test tools. For example, the occlusion alarm of a syringe pump can be tested by modifying a standard syringe and applying a certain weight to the plunger of the syringe, with the pump in vertical position. The alarm should be triggered (or not) for certain weights. This is a simple alternative to using an expensive infusion pump analyzer.

The aim of this project is to give overview of critical tests and parameters for a wide range of medical devices, and for each of those find or define simple but reliable DIY test and calibration methods.
