The image guided treatment of tumours by means of locally placed, radioactive sources, makes high dose rate (HDR) gynaecological brachytherapy (BT) a contemporary example of personalized care. The BT treatment quality depends on the ability to accurately place sources at a series of dwell positions. For most patients, an optimal dose distribution can be achieved by needle channels in an intracavitary applicator, sometimes supplemented by interstitial needles.
The project involves the development of personalized needle applicators for gynaecological BT cancer treatment. Graduation assignments can be involve:
- Design of personalized 3-D printed prototypes,
- Optimization of needle paths within the applicator (path planning),
- Design of a test setup from phantom material, based on MRI.
