The image guided treatment of tumours by means of locally placed, radioactive sources, makes high dose rate (HDR) gynaecological brachytherapy (BT) a contemporary example of personalized care. The BT treatment quality depends on the ability to accurately place sources at a series of dwell positions. For most patients, an optimal dose distribution can be achieved by catheter channels in an intracavitary applicator, sometimes supplemented by interstitial catheters.
The project involves the development of personalized catheter applicators for gynaecological BT cancer treatment. Facets that can be studied include the construction of personalized (outer geometry as well as internal catheter channels) 3-D printed prototypes, the comparison of optional printing materials, and workflow related aspects (in collaboration with the LUMC).
